$2.6M for 110 extra spaces will cause parking pain

THE good news is that Gosford Council will spend $2.6 million providing another 110 parking spaces in busy Terrigal; the bad news is the Wilson Rd car park will be closed for more than a month to allow it to happen.

A Gosford-based company has won the tender to build an additional level on the Wilson St carpark which will take five months to complete.

Initially council was told the carpark would only close for 16 days during construction, but that’s increased to allow for formwork and concrete curing.

Some parking spaces in the vicinity of the site will still be available during construction and additional car parking will also be available at the Terrigal Haven.

The work will be completed outside of any peak season and notification will be given before it starts.

The council also agreed at its Tuesday meeting to survey residents living in Webb, Melbourne and Adelaide streets at East Gosford to get their views on the current parking issues and whether they would support more parking restrictions.

The council received a report on traffic and parking conditions around those streets as well as streets around Wamberal, Erina, Avoca Beach and Gosford Public Schools following complaints from residents living near those schools.

Councillor Vicki Scott said East Gosford residents were unhappy with the report because it did not address their concerns, especially with the large number of high school students continuing to park in their streets and across driveways.

“The residents are just asking for a compromise, they want their lifestyle protected,” Cr Scott said.

Deputy Mayor Craig Doyle said parking rules associated with East Gosford schools should be part of their orientation package each year.

“There should be education first, then encouragement and then enforcement,” he said.
