Job Description

$90,000 plus superannuation and car

Sprint Horticulture is an innovative horticultural company specialising in the production, sales and distribution of ornamental plants. We represent licensed varieties developed by breeders in Australia and around the world. Additionally, we have a number of company owned varieties protected by patent and plant breeders rights worldwide. With access to leading plant genetics, Sprint is at the forefront of market development.

To be aware of plant breeding developments on a global level and to engage with other companies and individuals at the forefront of plant breeding and to summarize and provide advice on this external research and development for use internally.

To plan the acquisition of new plant varieties and convert them via coordinated comparative research trials conducted both in-house and at external sites into business opportunities by gathering commercial variety attribute information from breeders, engaging with customers during the field trial process and training staff internally.

To plan, lead and organize which research projects are commercially most valuable by making projections of market size, potential sales and gross profit prior to establishing the research project.

To plan and control the timing and distribution of trial plants to multiple national trial locations.

To direct and control the evaluation of all trials on a seasonal basis by planning tours to national customer trial sites to collect data.

To direct staff internally to perform all tasks for the establishment of in-house research trials.

To control the formation and maintenance of a central information system of trial data, reports and photographs.

To assess and then interpret the results of research trials, prepare reports and make recommendations on which products should be included as commercial market introductions.

To assess products after collecting trial data and develop Technical Bulletins that communicate meaningful trial results that can be applied by customers so that they can achieve a successful crop.

To set up training sessions for each crop so that in-house sales staff become equipped with knowledge to adequately answer customer inquiries.

After completing a research and development project to then prepare production plans including scheduling, the sourcing of elite stock, and to prepare annual purchase plans in cooperation with the sales team.

A key requirement is that you have at least 3 years commercial experience in a similar research and development role in the ornamental horticulture industry.

You will be required to provide scientific and technical leadership by developing growing protocols for both internal company use and for customers.

We require a person with a Horticulture bachelor degree or higher qualification.

You must have significant experience in directing plant research trials which resulted in meaningful commercial results that were applied for commercial gain.

You must be able to show/demonstrate a problem solving capability in a similar research and development role.

You must have ornamental crop production experience and be educated in the area of horticulture.

You must be able to demonstrate a proven ability to identify market trends and to then identify products to fulfill emerging market opportunities.

You must have a developed network of breeders worldwide.

You must demonstrate a proven ability to network within the global ornamental horticulture industry.

A diverse experience in different Genera is highly desirable with a significant experience in shrub and perennial varieties.
