HE WAS once at the heart of the Central Coast Mariners but former coach Lawrie McKinna has signed with fierce rivals the Newcastle Jets as chief executive.

Football Federation Australia formally announced the sale on Tuesday to new owner Martin Lee, the president and chief executive of Ledman Optoelectronics.

Mr McKinna brought the Chinese consortium to the table three months ago, through a Chinese contact, and was asked to take on a senior management role from early on.

But the former Gosford mayor, whose role finished three weeks ago when the Gosford and Wyong councils were sacked, has not closed the door on politics for good.

“I want to keep people guessing,” he said.

Mr McKinna is excited about reigniting a career in football that started when he received his first pay cheque as a 16-year-old semi-pro footballer 39 years ago.

He’s hopeful friends and supporters of his on the Central Coast will understand.

“I gave everything I had to the Mariners. And obviously I offered my services to the Mariners to help out last year and they said thanks but no thanks, which was fine,” Mr McKinna said.

Mr McKinna said he intended to hit the ground running at the helm of the Jets.

“A big thing for them is they have to engage back into the business community and the local community,” he said.

“They need to gain the confidence of Newcastle businesses.”

Mr McKinna has experience in senior administration in the A-League, serving as general manager of football at the Mariners, after his time as coach.

He will maintain his ties to football on the Central Coast as coach of his grandsons’ Tuggerah under-9C side.
